[dt. »intelligenter Stift«], in Belgien entwickeltes System, das Personen identifiziert, wenn diese schreiben, z. B., wenn sie eine Unterschrift leisten. Der eigentliche SmartPen ist ein mit Sensoren ausgestatteter Kugelschreiber, der beim Schreiben alle Bewegungsrichtungen, Beschleunigungen, Kräfte und Neigungen registriert. Die von den Sensoren registrierten Werte werden per Funk an einen Computer übertragen und dort ausgewertet. So lässt sich für jeden Benutzer ein unverwechselbares Bewegungsprofil ermitteln, das ihn eindeutig identifiziert. Die biometrische Charakterisierung durch Smartpen soll wie andere biometrische Methoden herkömmliche Identifizierungsverfahren ersetzen (Biometrie).
